The tab-separated clipboard format explained
When you copy cells from Excel or Google Sheets, the clipboard contains the cells as text with tab characters between columns and newline characters between rows. This is the TSV (Tab-Separated Values) format, which predates CSV and remains the dominant clipboard interchange format for spreadsheet data. Pasting into a text editor reveals the structure directly. The Markdown table format uses pipe | characters to delimit columns, dashes --- to form the separator row between the header and body, and optional colons for column alignment. Conversion is straightforward: split on newlines for rows, split on tabs for cells, escape any pipe characters inside cell content, pad cells to the widest value in each column, and join with the correct separators.
Column alignment and rendering
Markdown tables support three column alignment modes through the separator row syntax: left-aligned (default dashes: ---), right-aligned (trailing colon: ---:), and center-aligned (leading and trailing colons: :---:). While Markdown renderers compute actual text alignment themselves and the separator row only provides a semantic hint, properly formatted separators are required for GitHub Flavored Markdown rendering — a separator row with no dashes at all will produce plain text.
